Christy: Final Proposal

My proposal is for a photo walk, magazine-like publication, and gallery/ display space.

As I am moving back home and back into the community that I came from, I thought this would be a good way to get reintegrated and to reform the relationships that I left behind.

It’s been hard to find and keep a photo community during my time here. I think this project would provide me not only the chance to get back into one, but to keep one active. There’s just something about going out and giving yourself a schedule to take photos, but without having to think, or for them to have to answer to something in particular. It ends up being a refreshing process and a recharging one.

A photo walk is a great way to develop a friendly community in the ever-competitive world of photography.

The walk times could vary between day and night, but we would ideally meet up a few times a month. At least 2? But more would be great.
We could potentially create a theme for the week or something to inspire where the imagery would come from. We would also need a way of determining where to take our photos that day as there are plenty of good meeting spots! Perhaps we switch off choosing?

Throughout my time in photo communities, I have always noticed a strange vibe to them in which some people want to keep their skills or knowings a secret. This is especially true when dealing with personal practice and images.
This photo walk proposal provides the opportunity to break this up and bring people together over a common theme.

I feel as though this would be different from other walks because I want it to keep going. I would like to produce some sort of publication, produced quarterly (magazine, zine, book), to keep the documentary and street photography aspect thriving.
This is also a great way to keep track of the history and ever changing streets of Vegas. There is always something someone else sees that you haven’t.

There are some photo walks that already happen, some of which I have participated in.
Scott Kelby, a big photo guy, hosts a world wide one where everyone goes out on one day all over the world. I have participated in that one, one with my school, and one more that I can’t remember right now. I was also a member of a class at the community college, called The Las Vegas Document, which was structured similarly to this.

Lastly, I would like to have some sort of permanent space to display the images. This will not only provide a great display and tourist attraction, but it will give photographers the ability to come in and work in a gallery-like setting. It will also bring people from outside of a photo community into one. The downtown, First Friday scene would be a great venue for something like this.

Why is this different? We will produce a publication, have a space to display the imagery, keep it going, and stay connected once a walk is over.
It’s also a way of taking a popular, every-day activity of taking photos on the strip etc. and making it something more than that.

MONDAY NOTES

Hey guys – many apologies, it's been a comedy of errors today. Dealing with a busted water heater.

Here are some instructions for today, as well as info for the final.

The online course evaluation is here - please take ten minutes today to fill it out (I do read them!):

https://www.surveymonkey.com/s/Lanier_Christian_DART_480https://www.surveymonkey.com/s/Lanier_Christian_DART_480

Our final is on Monday, 5/13, from 3pm-5pm. It's going to be one extra "production" day, to give us a last chance to finish up any editing details, or sneak in a last blog post or two.

For today, I want to make sure the Tea Palic interview and the Amanda Dabel interview get completely squared away, including titles and credits. Also, I'd like the Poetry Slam footage to be chopped up into one 2-3 minute "trailer" (with a sampling of good stanzas from a variety of the poets), plus four separate videos giving the full performance of the four winners (third place was a tie). Lastly - Forest, you should move along your two business competition videos far enough that, with editing on Friday, you can finish them up by the end of our final.

Brett - if you can help Erik with the Palic interview, and Andrew, if you can help Maggie with the Dabel one, that would be great. Once those look good to go, you could maybe help with the Poetry Slam stuff - in the meantime, Justin, if you could get started with those clips, that would be great.

Chelsea sent me an email saying she can't make it today - but she has posted up the San Fran trip.

Again, sorry to punk out today  and I know last week was scattered too. Was hoping to have a rousing finish this week, and am amazed & appalled I'm dealing with this out-of-left-field water heater drama. If you need to call me during class time, feel free - my cell is 415-845-5670.

SNC Multimedia Marketing: Spring 2013 Kickoff

Hi everyone – my apologies for missing our first class, I have to be out of town for a memorial service. I've spoken to most of you personally about what we'll be doing in this class, but as a quick recap – we'll be working together to create short video and multimedia pieces about interesting things going on at SNC, which can be plugged into the SNC website as promotional materials. The topics might include student profiles, visiting artists and lecturers, interesting student research, and campus events.

I'd like you to do two things before our next class, on Monday 1/28.

NUMBER 1: Review all the embedded video and the links on this blog post. These are all examples of previous multimedia pieces that fit with what we're going to do this semester.

NUMBER 2: Come to class with at least one idea of an SNC story you think might be good to make a multimedia piece about. I want to capture things outside of the Art Department - we should have at least one piece that showcases something in the Science, Humanities, and Business Departments. We may not execute all the ideas you bring to class, but I want us to start pooling ideas. So come up with a pitch – and be as specific about it as you can, singling out who should be interviewed for it, when the event is happening (if there's a specific date), and so on. It could be a recent event that's already happened, but which might have media attached to it (photos or videos of the event) – examples might include the Trashion show, or the work one of Chuck's students did to apply spectral analysis of satellite photos to identify specific types of trees around the Tahoe basin.

So here are some links for you to look at:

Visiting Artist/Writer Tim O'Brien at Sierra Nevada College (this one is much longer than our target length will be – I think the ideal length for our multimedia pieces will be somewhere between 3-5 minutes):
